Informed by the imagination of YSG and the heritage of its owners, a Melbourne home’s new extension embraces Egyptian iconography, Danish classics and a magic carpet of multi-coloured tiles.
Lindyl Zanbaka, Vogue Living

Stripping this classic Victorian weatherboard back to its original box frame, we designed an entirely new light-filled addition studded with coloured glass windows that now occupies two thirds of the family home.

Bathrooms take in hammam-like features and pixelated porcelain tile patterns inspired by Persian rugs define zones in the sunlit living spaces (also creeping up vertical surfaces and flowing out onto the courtyard).

Maple joinery brackets the kitchen and dining areas with Nordic precision, enlivened by recessed nooks and protruding cupboard pulls.

Our clients possessed radically different design preferences. One is Danish with an appreciation for clean finishes and pale timber. The other is Egyptian-Australian, with a passion for pattern, tactility and colour.
Merging their aesthetic inclinations, multiple timelines and references to faraway locations – both Middle Eastern and Nordic – co-exist harmoniously within rendered hempcrete walls.
